Key takeaways
-
The extension is not a tax on the product. It is the mechanism that fills your chart.
-
It reads the same page you see, so it can fill fields in an EMR that has no API and no partnership.
-
It is hard-mapped and tested on Boulevard, Aesthetic Record, and PatientNow. Other browser EMRs run in a generic mode with a paste fallback.
-
Your EMR's built-in scribe writes a note. The extension is what puts a note into the chart's fields.
-
It works in the browser. Aesthetic Record iPad users copy from the Symbal app instead.
It is 9:40 at night. The last patient left at 6. You have four charts open, and you're trying to remember whether the left masseter got 20 units or 25.
You've seen the pitch in EMR ads: no extra logins, no browser extensions, no third-party apps. It sounds like a promise. Symbal is a Chrome extension, and that is the point.
What does the Symbal Chrome extension actually do?
The Symbal Chrome extension sits on top of your EMR in the browser to record visits and autofill chart fields with one click.
It syncs your calendar. The day's schedule is right there when you open the tab. You can record a visit directly from the tool without switching windows.
Prefer recording on your phone? The handoff is automatic. Finish the session on your phone, and the note lands in the browser extension, ready to drop into your chart.
Autofill needs a browser extension to work. The tool reads the page on your screen. It finds the allergies field, vitals, treatment plan, and session notes. It clicks through tabs. It opens sub-modals in the EMR to reach the right spot. You review the text, fix anything you want, and approve it.
Why doesn't Symbal integrate directly with your EMR?
Symbal uses a browser extension because most med spa EMRs do not offer open public APIs or quick integration deals.
There is no public API for writing to a Boulevard chart or a PatientNow chart. An official partnership takes years and a contract the EMR company controls. If you wait for that, you wait.
The extension doesn't need permission from your EMR. It only needs what you already have: a logged-in browser tab with the chart open. That's the whole trick. So it works on an EMR that has never heard of us.
Does your EMR's built-in AI scribe actually fill out the chart?
Most built-in EMR scribes generate a summary block, but they still leave you to type data into individual fields.
That gap is the reason we built Symbal.
A built-in scribe listens to the visit and produces a block of text. PatientNow describes theirs as "structured, editable SOAP notes inside the EMR. Providers can review, edit, and approve every note." But that's a note in a panel.
Your chart is not one panel. It has separate boxes for history, allergies, vitals, the product, the units, the injection sites, the plan, and the consent. Whether a built-in scribe places data into each structured box is a question to ask on your next demo. If it doesn't, you're still typing. Or copying and pasting. Twofold's own med spa page says its users "copy and paste finalized notes" into Boulevard, Aesthetic Record, PatientNow, and others.
And some systems don't have a scribe yet. Does Boulevard have an AI scribe? Not as of September 2026. Their blog says they are "actively developing AI Scribe."
What are the limits of the Symbal extension?
The Symbal extension hard-maps three EMRs, runs a generic mode on other browser EMRs, and falls back to a copy-paste box if a fill fails.
We'd rather you know what it can't do before you install it.
| Mode | Which EMRs | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-mapped | Boulevard, Aesthetic Record, PatientNow | We mapped and tested each field and each tab. This is what we stand behind. |
| Generic | Other browser-based EMRs | The AI reads the page and returns actions. It tries up to 3 times. |
| Paste fallback | Every mode, when a fill fails | A box with the full note content, ready to copy into the chart. |
Why only three hard-mapped EMRs? Because 95 percent accuracy sounds fine until you realize one form in twenty fails. That's not acceptable for a medical record. So we hard-map, test, and only then say we support an EMR. Mapping a new one takes about 2 to 3 days of engineering. We add them as practices ask.
Here's an honest gap. Many Aesthetic Record injectors chart on the iPad app, not in a browser. The extension needs the browser. On the iPad, you copy and paste from the Symbal app. That saves the writing time, but not the pasting step.
How much does EMR chart autofill cost?
Symbal includes chart autofill in its single $65 plan. Others charge for it separately or gate it behind a higher tier.
Look at what these companies publish: Freed puts EHR push in its $119 per month tier. Aesthetic Record's ChartSmart add-on tops out at $75 per month for unlimited charts. Symbal includes the extension and autofill in its one $65 per provider per month plan.
We won't tell you how many hours Symbal saves you. We can't substantiate that yet. You can do the math for your own clinic. Say each chart takes 10 minutes of typing after the visit. If you see 8 patients a day, that's 80 minutes a day. That comes to roughly 6.7 hours a week. Change the numbers for your schedule, but the math is yours.
Is adding another browser extension worth it for your practice?
It's worth it if you want to stop doing manual chart entry after your EMR's scribe finishes writing the note.
We hear the hesitation. Adding software feels like a chore. But the extension is one install and one login. It reads the page you already have open. There is no second system to chart in.
Whether it's worth it comes down to one question: after your EMR's scribe writes the note, who fills the chart? If the answer is still you, the extension removes that step. And the thing we care about most isn't a number on a dashboard. It's that you can look at the patient instead of the screen.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need IT to install it?
No. It installs from the Chrome Web Store like any extension, and you sign in with your Symbal account. If your practice locks down Chrome, your IT person can approve it once for everyone.
Does it work on iPad?
The extension works in the browser only. If you chart in Aesthetic Record's iPad app, record in the Symbal app and copy the note from there into the chart. If you chart in a browser on any device, the extension works.
What if it can't find a field?
On a hard-mapped EMR this should be rare, and we want to hear about it. In generic mode it retries up to 3 times. If it still fails, you get the paste box with the full note, so you're never stuck without the content.
Does it slow my browser?
The extension only runs on your EMR pages and does its work when you tell it to fill a chart. We have not published performance benchmarks, so we won't claim a number. If you notice a slowdown, tell us and we'll look.
