Key takeaways
-
PatientNow has a built-in AI Scribe that produces "structured, editable SOAP notes" for the provider to review, edit, and approve.
-
PatientNow claims "up to 25%" documentation time savings and positions its scribe as needing "no extra logins, browser extensions, or third-party platforms."
-
We built Symbal as a Chrome extension with hard-mapped fields on PatientNow's web app: treatment forms, note templates, medical history, vitals, session notes.
-
Legacy PatientNow desktop is not supported. The web app is.
-
Symbal is $65 per provider per month, free for 7 days, no credit card required.
It is 6:40 pm and you are still in the office. The last patient left at 5:15. You have spent every minute since then in PatientNow: opening tabs, filling the treatment form, updating history, writing the note.
PatientNow is one of the med spa EMRs that already has an AI scribe built in. That is a real option, and if you use PatientNow, you should look at it. This post explains what PatientNow's scribe does, what "no browser extensions" means in practice, and what our extension does differently on the same web app.
Who uses PatientNow?
PatientNow serves med spas, plastic surgery practices, and aesthetic clinics. It has been around long enough to have two generations: a legacy desktop application and a newer web app that runs in a browser. Which one your practice uses decides a lot about what tools can work with it.
Does PatientNow have its own AI notes?
Yes. PatientNow's AI Scribe, in their words, produces "structured, editable SOAP notes inside the EMR. Providers can review, edit, and approve every note." They claim "up to 25%" documentation time savings. Price is not published; you get it through their sales team.
Their positioning line is worth reading closely: "No extra logins, browser extensions, or third-party platforms." That sentence is aimed at products like ours, and it is a fair point. Here is what it means:
-
No extra logins: the scribe is inside PatientNow, so there is no second account.
-
No browser extensions: nothing to install in Chrome, nothing to update.
-
No third-party platforms: one vendor, one BAA, one support line.
If those three things matter most to you, the built-in scribe has a real edge. We will not argue otherwise.
What does Symbal do differently on PatientNow?
PatientNow's scribe produces a SOAP note inside the EMR for you to review. We designed Symbal around what happens next: does the provider still open the treatment form, the history tab, and the vitals section and fill them by hand? Ask PatientNow that question in your demo. We can only speak for ours.
Symbal records the visit on your phone, tablet, or the Chrome extension, transcribes it, and writes a structured SOAP note. Then the extension reads the PatientNow web app page you have open and fills the fields we have hard-mapped:
-
Treatment forms.
-
Note templates.
-
Medical history.
-
Vitals.
-
Session notes.
Hard-mapped means our engineers mapped and tested each of those fields in PatientNow's web app. We do not let the AI guess on the fly. The extension can move between tabs and open sub-modals in PatientNow to reach them. PatientNow is one of three EMRs we have done this for, with Boulevard and Aesthetic Record.
Do all browser extensions fill PatientNow the same way?
No. Not all browser extensions do the same thing in an EMR, and PatientNow is a good example. Our engineer tested Freed's Chrome extension against PatientNow's web app. In that test, the extension placed text into whatever fields it found on the current screen, without navigating the form or switching tabs.
That is one observation from one test, not a verdict on Freed. Their product may behave differently in your setup, and it is worth trying yourself, since Freed offers a 7-day trial with no card. We share it because it explains why we chose to hard-map PatientNow instead of relying on a generic fill. The tabs and sub-modals are where the work is.
How to set up Symbal with PatientNow
-
Add the Symbal Chrome extension.
-
Log in to Symbal and to the PatientNow web app in the same browser.
-
Open the patient's chart.
-
Click Autofill in the extension.
-
Review every field.
-
Approve, and the note is in the chart.
Your synced calendar shows the day's schedule in the extension, with each session ready to autofill. The "Ask AI about this patient's history" feature answers questions from prior notes, and Beyond the Chart surfaces the personal details a patient mentioned last time, like a career win or a child's new school.
What are the limits of Symbal?
Symbal needs the PatientNow web app in Chrome, and every note still needs your review. Here is the full list of what to know before you install it:
-
Legacy PatientNow desktop is not supported. The extension only works in the PatientNow web app in Chrome. If you are on the desktop version, the Symbal app gives you the note to copy.
-
PatientNow's scribe is built in and ours is an extension. That is one more thing to install and one more BAA to sign. That is a real cost, and the tradeoff is what gets filled.
-
Every note is a draft until you approve it. Read it first.
-
If a field cannot be filled, the extension shows a copy-paste box with the full note.
-
We do not publish a time-savings number. PatientNow's "up to 25%" is their claim about their product, and we have no data of our own to stand behind yet.
-
Recording needs consent. California is an all-party consent state (Penal Code 632). Confirm for your state and verify with a healthcare attorney.
Is Symbal secure and HIPAA compliant?
Symbal is HIPAA compliant. We sign a Business Associate Agreement at signup. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2 and above) and at rest (AES-256), hosted on AWS in the US (Oregon region). Transcription runs on Deepgram and note generation on OpenAI, both under signed BAAs. Audio is kept 30 days by default, configurable by the practice, then hard-deleted. There is a per-patient do-not-record flag, deletion on request within 72 hours, an audit log on request, and breach notification within 5 business days. Symbal does not train AI models on patient data.
How much does Symbal cost?
One plan. $65 per provider per month, or $52 per provider per month billed annually. Every feature, including the extension and PatientNow autofill. Cancel anytime. Multi-location groups can contact us for custom pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am on legacy desktop or the web app?
If you open PatientNow in Chrome by going to a web address, you are on the web app. If you open it from a program installed on the computer, you are on legacy desktop, and the extension will not see it.
Do I need PatientNow's permission to use Symbal?
No. The extension reads the page you are logged into, the same way you do. There is no API integration and no partnership required.
Should I just use PatientNow's built-in scribe?
If a SOAP note inside the EMR with no extension is what you want, try it. If you want the treatment form, history, and vitals filled too, try ours during the free week and compare on a real chart.
Open a chart in the PatientNow web app and see what fills. Try Symbal free for 7 days, no credit card required.
